Character counter questions
What is the character limit on X?
The counter uses 280 characters for a post on X. For comparison, Threads allows 500, Bluesky 300 and Mastodon 500, though many Mastodon servers set their own limit.
How long can an Instagram caption be?
2,200 characters. Readers only see the first lines before the "more" link, so lead with the point of the caption.
What are the limits for LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube?
A LinkedIn post can be 3,000 characters, a TikTok caption 2,200 and a YouTube description 5,000. Pick a network above to see its limit next to your text.
What does the counter count?
Every letter, number, space, line break and emoji. The "without spaces" figure is there for forms and networks that don't count spaces, and the word count splits on spaces and line breaks. An emoji can count as two characters, because that's how browsers measure text.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser, so what you type isn't sent to our servers or stored. Drafts and unpublished posts stay yours.
Will the network count the same number?
Usually, but not always. Networks treat details such as links and some emoji in their own way, so when you're within a few characters of a limit, leave a little room. For the networks RobinReach publishes to, the limits shown are the same ones it checks before a post goes out.
How do I shorten a post that is over the limit?
Cut the warm-up and start with the point, swap long phrases for single words, drop hashtags you don't need, or move extra detail into a reply or the first comment. If one network's limit is much tighter than the rest, write a shorter version just for it.
